It is not in the way that you might think.
Tragic Ending is the title of the latest record by the Jersey City based rock band that was launched last Saturday, February 9, at the Iron Monkey in Jersey City. It is the band's 3rd release since their eight-track debut called 'Extended Play' back in 2004, and to those who have been following the band' career, Tragic Ending is a milestone- the culmination of everything new about Bleud.
Bleud bassist Jerwin Glorioso says that the record is a rebirth:
"Tragic Ending is the preview of the new Bleud. This record is definitely different from our previous ones. I think we were able to express ourselves better, part of it is because I think we found our niche. With Musings and the debut EP, we were still young and somewhat unsure in general. I mean, we barely knew each other four years ago and the only thing we had in common was our passion for music. Fast-forward it to today and Tragic Ending is the result. With this album, we've grown together as a band, and with the addition of Jay, we were able to do a little re-arranging within the band–instrument-wise. Now, we're more comfortable and able to express our creative side better, which is very fullfilling."

“The band is an enigma,” says one Filipino-American music journalist in describing Sodapop Suicide, one of the most exciting bands in the FilAm music scene.
The band seldom plays live and devotes their time mostly in the studio recording songs and honing their craft. Now the time is ripe for them to release their 2-sided single and their label Soulworks Records will do so this month through free downloads here on this website.
Sodapop Suicide’s singles are Beauty Queen, a Tagalog rocker with a catchy riff and the spacey-ethereal number, Voltes 5. The band’s songwriting, mostly done by front man Val Guevarra and guitarist Cho Lopez, is a throwback to a bygone era – an era when simplicity meant power, and melody is paramount. Sodapop Suicide made gigantic waves in 2006 when their single, Sana Naman, from the very successful Filipino-American compilation album Rock in the Box 1, became the first runaway hit of the release. It was such a hit that when the band performed at the pre launch party at the Knitting Factory NY that year, they almost caused a riot. In the 2007, the band concentrated in writing and recording their album. By December of that year, they wrapped up their sessions and plotted their single’s release. “We are finished with most of our songs. There are some overdubs left but we’re confident that the full album will come out this year. We talked to our label and we agreed to release these songs because we just want everyone to have a slice of what we are going to serve later,” says Valter. However, when asked when the band would hit the road again, Valter could only offer a shrug. Sodapop Suicide’s free releases are a great way to jumpstart the year not only for their band, but for the Filipino-American music scene as well. NEW YORK– One night, eight people are gathered in a small dining table inside a nice townhouse in North Jersey. There is pasta with white sauce on the table, along with freshly baked garlic bread, some wine and pizza.
It is by no means a formal dinner. It is more akin to a group study where laptops are open and humming, papers are scattered, and the sound of pencils shredding lead on white bond papers blends with the crackle of toasted crust, laughter a music.
The eight people in the meeting represent different sectors in the Filipino-American music industry and they are in caucus to select the artists, and songs that will make one of the most highly anticipated albums this year–Rock in the Box 2.
After deliberations and tallying, the meeting ends, and a final roster is at hand. Rock in the Box 2 is on the way. “It is not an easy task”, says J. Antiporda, Soulworks Records VP. “ Selecting 16 out of 100 songs to make the record is a task that will give anybody sleepless nights for quite a while.” Given the volume of submissions that the record label, Soulworks Records, received from artists, it is indeed a daunting task to trim the fat to come up with the lean portion that will best represent the Rock in the Box series. |
