NEW YORK– One night, eight people are gathered in a small dining table inside a nice townhouse in North Jersey. There is pasta with white sauce on the table, along with freshly baked garlic bread, some wine and pizza.
It is by no means a formal dinner. It is more akin to a group study where laptops are open and humming, papers are scattered, and the sound of pencils shredding lead on white bond papers blends with the crackle of toasted crust, laughter a music.
The eight people in the meeting represent different sectors in the Filipino-American music industry and they are in caucus to select the artists, and songs that will make one of the most highly anticipated albums this year–Rock in the Box 2.
After deliberations and tallying, the meeting ends, and a final roster is at hand. Rock in the Box 2 is on the way. “It is not an easy task”, says J. Antiporda, Soulworks Records VP. “ Selecting 16 out of 100 songs to make the record is a task that will give anybody sleepless nights for quite a while.” Given the volume of submissions that the record label, Soulworks Records, received from artists, it is indeed a daunting task to trim the fat to come up with the lean portion that will best represent the Rock in the Box series. |

The submission process for next year's highly anticipated sequel to one of the most successful Fil-Am music compilation albums is over.
Now it's time for the selection process to begin.
The selection committee:
The selection of the final 14 songs that will make the final cut of the album will be handled by nine individuals: Four industry personnel, two from the media, and three music fans.
The committee will employ a percentage system of selection based on the following criteria:
1. Melody - %35 2. Lyrics - % 35 3. Originality:15 4. Performance: %10 5. "IT" factor: %5
The committee will also be voting in a blind system, wherein they will just be given the songs without knowing who the artists are. Likewise, they would not be able to know the votes of their fellow members of the committee.
The final lineup will be released in the week before Christmas, and it will be posted on www.poptimesmagazine.com and www.soulworksrecords.com
The selected artists will have the option to re-record their songs, free of charge, in the label's New Jersey Studio with the label's in house producers. Schedules of sessions will be discussed if artists would make use of this option.
Selected artists will receive a licensing contract from Souwlorks Records, which they will sign, upon reading the provisions. It will be sent back by mail to the label before production. |
